Although the number of publications on jihadi terrorists in Europe is increasing, much more knowledge is needed if we want to make it as difficult as possible for jihadis to attack us and disturb the peace within society. This requires a number of exploratory studies to start with. Basically, we need to know who these jihadis are, where they come from and what they aim for. Other fundamental questions relate to their islamist and jihadi ideologies, the process of radicalisation and recruitment, and their modus operandi. Furthermore, we have to keep track of the trends and developments if we want to be able to manage the threat and to prevent jihadi terrorism.

The new database on Jihadi Terrorism in Europe intends to give a systematic and detailed overview on all terrorist attacks as well as plots since 2001. By focusing on the convicted jihadi terrorists, the database will help to search for patterns regarding this complex phenomenon.

The project is a co-product of Leiden University’s Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism and the International Centre for Counter Terrorism – the Hague (ICCT). The official launch is planned for Spring 2014. It will be launched and hosted at the website of the website of the ICCT.
